Golf Tutorials from Coach Mullen
For Grades 2 - 8

These videos are for any student who is already involved with the golf program or interested in the golf program!

SCS Golf Program description: The golf program at SCOS is a spring season for competitions (March to mid May), with practice and home matches at Paschal Golf Course in Wake Forest. Some of the other schools involved are St. Michael’s, St. Timothy's, Mary Magdalene, and Cathedral School. Gym practice is available as well hitting into a practice net, primarily on Tuesdays, and some Thursdays (a sign up will be coming soon). These are half hour, one-on-one sessions, and basically are designed to make the process of getting started easy and readily available for parents and interested students, as well as providing a resource for the established competitive players to meet with Coach Mullen occasionally, if needed. Other practices/matches are occasionally set up at Wildwood Green, Brevofield and other local venues.

History of the SCS Golf Programs: The golf program was started in 2017 when Matt Mullen suggested it to the previous principal, who along with the Athletic Director at the time, embraced the idea and supported him in making it a reality. The initial roster of 8 children with very little golf experience, did represent the school well despite the obvious struggle involved with competing against established programs, and rosters replete with very strong competitive junior golfers. Coach Mullen quickly realized that a smaller school like St. Catherine’s would need to have a strong developmental program to get younger kids that are interested, quickly started and on their way. These videos were born out of that realization, and are a first attempt to have material available that any student can access to not only get started, but hopefully become very grounded in the key fundamentals of the game, and quickly (within a couple years) become competitive if they so desire. While the basic elements are all there, Coach realizes that over time, they can be refined and made even better and plans to continue that process in the coming years.

Coach Mullen bio: Coach Matt Mullen grew up outside of Philadelphia and graduated from Villanova University in 1976 where he played competitive tennis up the level of #2 on the Wildcats squad his senior year. For a period of about 10 years, he had substantial experience as a tennis instructor, mostly for juniors. While in college and then medical school, he took up golf as a hobby, and after 5 years in the US Navy, settled back in PA, and became a strong amateur competitor, with a handicap index at one point of 3.8. He also became very interested in junior golf instruction when both of his boys showed a keen interest in the game. Matt (junior) eventually went on to the Golf Academy of America, and Joe has had mini-tour competitive experience and is currently an assistant golf professional at Wildwood Green GC here in north Raleigh. Matt (senior) did complete the 6 hours of USKidsGolf coach certification training and has continued to fine tune his approach to the process of getting young people started properly on the road to learning this great game in the most enjoyable and efficient way possible. He lives in Wake Forest with his wife of 36 years, Maribel, who also enjoys the game of golf, but would “rather be dancing”.
